Life’s Scares

Life’s Scares

By: Beatriz Flores

What were you afraid of when you were a child? Monsters? Ghosts? Or any other mysterious mythical creatures? It is weird how identical our fears are when we were children. But when we become grownups the things that keep us awake at night are still universally similar. Maybe they vary in shapes and sizes on how they present themselves in our daily lives, but they still are the same.

There is no shame in being afraid. Fear does not take our age or maturity into account; it will always be there. It is both natural and essential to who we are as humans. But we need to act and overcome those fears so they won’t hinder us in exploring our full potentials. What are the things that scare us? And how can we overcome them?

  1. The fear of not providing enough

As we continuously grow, so are our responsibilities. It is how we take on these challenges maturely that defines our character. For some, the transition is slow and gradual, but for many young Filipinos the transition is haste and overwhelming. They go from supporting themselves to supporting their families as soon as they land a job. The fear of not being able to provide enough for those they love is stronger for them.

Our parents have dedicated their entire life supporting us and our siblings, the least we can do is to take that responsibility off their shoulders when we are grown up. But it is natural to feel that we are just a bunch of children playing dress up in our adult clothes as we navigate our new reality. When bills, tuition fees, and other expenses become overbearing, it is natural that we fear that we might not be able to do enough. Yet like what our parents did, we will find a way and persevere. We will provide enough for our loved ones.

  1. The fear of health emergencies

This pandemic has given us different kinds of fears, still constantly stressing on the health and wellness of our loved ones is not a new territory. COVID-19 has shown us that any of our loved ones could get severely ill very real.  This virus is as invisible and as infectious as they come, it lingers in places we have always assumed to be safe. It is a thought that we can no longer shove aside. It is time we take an aggressive yet cautious safety protocol to protect the people we love.

Health emergencies choose no one. Anyone can fall victim— a child, an adult, or an elderly person. Worse, it can be your child, your partner, your parents or any of your loved ones. COVID-19, for example does not care if the people you love are at the healthiest phases of their life, they can still suffer from this dreaded disease. The way that health emergencies have shifted our realities for the worse is deeply unsettling. You need to step up and face this fear if not for you, but for those closest to you.

  1. The fear of a life not lived to the fullest

Constantly thinking that you could be off somewhere doing something that makes you happier can be draining. Spending your time just daydreaming of the life you could have had will take its toll eventually. For some, it happens right after working their first desk job, but for most that moment comes much later. The work you did not mind doing suddenly becomes exhausting, and you spend your hours feeling like you are just being dragged through the days. The urge to quit will be there and you will act on it sooner or later. And honestly, better now than the later.

No one should ever be paralyzed by the thoughts of the life they should have led. We all deserve the option to explore all the passions that keep our hearts beating. It is understandable how we have grown to think that pursuing the things you want to do is a luxury reserved for the well off. Maybe that was the case for the generations before us, but that ends now. Free yourself from your frightening what ifs! From now on, live a life without ever wondering what could have been.
